|Sub-Contractor Myth and Hype!!
Have you ever seen a ad on a company site that says "We don't use
sub-contractors" We only use our trained Technicians blah, blah, blah......
This does not set well with me for many reasons!
1. If a company who advertises they do not use subs then obviously they have
made an error in judgement and hired the wrong sub in the past. (Do you check
around for Qualifications?) <of course you do!> .. A Company that does not do
this ends up with a bad Sub-Contractor.... In my opinion its a reflection on the
company and there poor decision making on who they hire to do a job.
2. It is cheaper for the Company to pay a "Technician" say $12.00 an hour then it
is to hire a sub contractor who has dedicated his career to what he does. Who has
to furnish all his tools, insurance, labor and materials to do the job. I have
nothing against "Technicians or Employees" AT ALL! I was one for 15 years,
~But i do have a problem with companies making sub-contractors look bad~ I
am not here to make Employees look bad or Techs.. I am Just here to defend the
hard working honest Sub-Contractors out there. I have Sub contracted for the last
5 years for a company and i am very happy with them as they are with me as well.
If i need a subcontractor i will hire one. Of course i will do the proper
investigation, make sure there Experienced, and check there references. I will do
my Homework as they say.
3. Allot of Companies will hire an employee and then in about 2 months., send
them out to do some job that is way over there head and end up in a mess,
Causing damage to the customers property, possible injuries, or with a finished
job that doesn't meet the customers expectations. I know cause it happened to
me regularly in my rookie years, I was sent out and ended up being out all night
doing some job that i didn't have enough experience to be doing. ( I did however
always try to do the job right, safe and make the customer happy, but when i had
a minimal clue to what I was doing it made it allot harder.) I have 20 years
experience now and could go do the same job and be home in time to catch my
children ball games, have dinner with the family and feel good about the job i did
for the customer... Knowing that word of mouth will always! Get me more work.
4. Sub-Contractors can be allot better then a Companies employee. A sub picks a
profession and sticks to it. I understand there is some Subs out there they may
not be legitimate. For example... I Know how to do almost any kind of Door
there is.. I have the Experience, the training, and the tools for it. I would not go
out and start up a "Security Installation Company" and then and advertise as a
legitimate Sub-contractor for that trade. I Know very little about it and i have no
business doing it. If i take a job as a Sub-Contractor to install a Home Security
System. Then i am just asking for trouble.! I have no business doing it. I'm not
trained for it nor do i have the Experience.
5. In Short, I wish these Companies who advertise they don't use Subs.. Would
quit trying to use the " we don't use Sub-Contractors" advertising scheme. I am
standing up for the Professional Sub-Contractors out there that go out work hard
and try there best to give the customer what they have paid for and expect.

just that check at the end~
